Mixteco Kid

A Mixteco indigenous boy who dreams to be like his green-eyed fútbol hero, Chicharito, overcomes the forces of colorism and poverty to become a soccer sensation and unite a divided community.

Inspired by the films The Karate Kid, Rudy, and Bend It Like Beckham, Mixteco Kid is a coming-of-age story about a fifteen-year-old kid named Pablo from South Oxnard who dreams about being a soccer star. Pablo’s soccer hero is Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez who is tall, light-skinned, and has green eyes. Pablo has none of these physical traits. However, he’s determined to overcome his environment and the discrimination. However, along the way, Pablo turns away from his heritage and believes that success will make his own inner conflict go away. The hardest hurdle Pablo faces is accepting that he is worthy of this new success. Through trial and error, he learns that he needs to re-embrace his roots, and celebrate them with others. Pablo’s dream will open the door for others and heal a divided community.

We appreciate the support from the Oxnard Mixteco Community, all of our sponsors and supporters. Mixteco Kid has screened at the prestigious Oaxaca Film Festival and the Ojai Film Festival. See below for more details and visit our website: www.mixtecokid.com.
