Mariachi Girl

Sept 13th, 2019

Mariachi Girl – Written by Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, Mariachi Girl is the third production for Animo Theatre. Directed by Miguel Orozco with musical direction by Juan Carlos Ozuna of Mariachi Águilas, the coming of age bilingual musical debuted in 2018 in Oxnard and was staged at the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles and the Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara.  The performance was so popular that people attended the show multiple times, each time bringing friends and family to share in the experience. From the “Wows” to the “this takes me back to when I was a young child”, the show resonated with all ages.

Young Cita has dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, but runs counter to his traditional, cultural roots. Family dynamics and cultural stereotypes are explored in a musical that’s entertaining for the whole family. Join us for the next performance on Sept 13that the Doré Theater CSU Bakersfield.

El Bracero

In 2016, the mariachi opera, El Bracero opened at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. Written by Rosalinda Verde, directed by Miguel Orozco and featuring Mariachi Aguilas de Oxnard, the story follows a young man who travels from Mexico to the United States during the 1950s as part of the federal Bracero program. With classical mariachi music woven into the play, the plight of the Braceros and their contributions to the United States economy are heartwarmingly retold in an endearing story of sacrifice, love, and family. Opening night was standing room only and a second show was quickly added. El Bracero toured Ventura County performing at Oxnard and Moorpark Colleges and Santa Paula High School. The success of the show also brought it to East Los Angeles College.

¡Ay Chihuahua!

Following the success of El Bracero, Animo Theatre produced an original play written by Miguel Orozco. The musical is loosely based on Mr. Orozco’s family and takes place in 1960s Mexico. Following an unexpected tragedy, the lead character Poncho, leaves the city life and travels north to the United States. On his journey he is introduced to Mexico’s beautiful and diverse cultures, its people, and music. Mariachi music is prominently featured as it artfully captures the characters’ emotions. ¡Ay Chihuahua! was inspired by the Broadway musical Oklahoma! and offered a little bit of everything for everyone – Drama, Excitement, Love and amazing Music by Mariachi Aguílas de Oxnard. The production toured Ventura County in 2017 including Oxnard and Ventura College and Rancho Campana High School.
